ramblings

ok, just need to vent for a few minutes!!

it's no secret i have a VERY strained relationship with mattie's mom. i mean, she's nice. and she means well. but we are just not on the same page about anything.

i'm wild, she's tame. i'm not religous, she's a southern baptist (do i need to say more there? no offense to any baptist friends. we're just VERY different). i'm crazy liberal, she's as conservative as it gets (see southern baptist!).

basically, she doesn't seem to try very hard. she never calls. she rarely send cards to the kids. she's been to MN once in the 5 years we've lived here. she gets incredibly jealous that we're so close to my family & that we visit them often. and they visit us often.

now, i know some of that is based strictly on finances. but she could call the kids. she could send them cards. she doesn't. we put in as much effort as we recieve. my parents call every weekend, send cards, & visit numerous times a year. we do the same in return.

so today, mattie called her to break the news: we can't come down for easter. he works at a power plant & they are going into an outage next weekend. read: working crazyass long hours, nearly every day of the week. no one (repeat, NO ONE) is allowed to take vacation. yes, it sucks. but it's part of our life. every outage goes the same way. so, she was disappointed. then he happens to mention that the kids & i are probably going home (read: where i grew up. it will always be home to me). his mom goes on the rampage. she goes on saying how she just wants the truth & that we're cancelling our trip to 'bama so i can go home. he repeats that we are cancelling the trip there due to his work schedule & that we will reschedule for june or july when the outage is over. she doesn't believe him. it goes on & on & on. she continues complaining about the lack of balance in visits to my home & 'bama & how we spend every holiday with my family. all true. very true. it goes back to the effort thing.

GRRRRR.

but, whatever. we should be used to this by now.

so we have a little bet. today is march 1st. he isn't going to call her again. we're betting on how long it takes for her to call us. any guesses? go ahead....we won't be offended!!

while you're at it, could you please suggest a new title for this blog? clearly this is MY blog & is not about the whole family. although i often add stuff that we do as a fam, i also put in a lot of ME. since i'm not creative, i'm taking suggestions!

gimme your best bet as to when the evil MIL will call & a new name for this. got it?

good.

How about Aliwood? Play on Hollywood, with so much drama!!

OK, give me a while, I'm sure I'll come up with something better.

And ... my guess is ... 1 day. She'll call to harass you some more.

I am always envious of those folks that have kickin' parents/grandparents around to be with & help out with their kids. The hubs & I both come from somewhat shady backgrounds making it a very level playing field - No one EVER comes here to visit, we always have to go there - My MIL DOES DO fantastic with calling, sending the kids little care packages though - just never comes here...It's always up to us to go there and the FIL - don't even get me started on that one.
You are doing the right thing - hang in there.
now, I'm off to come up with a cool name for your blog...

I'm betting on about 2 months before she calls again if you make absolutely not contact with her. I completely understand about people having to put forth some effort instead of always relying on the other person. How long is long enough to keep putting up for a one sided relationship? I guess it's all about what you think the relationship is worth. Thankfully, I have good relationships with both sides of my family.

As for a new blog title...Alicat in the night...Nights with Alicat...endless possibilities.
